Priscilla Bacon Lodge
LSI Architects
The new Priscilla Bacon Lodge is a £12.5M new state-of-the-art Hospice building in Norfolk. In addition to 24 inpatient beds, which includes support for bariatric patients, a day unit, and a well-being centre, the Lodge will act as a hub for community-based services, enabling people to receive care in their own homes. In line with the client’s vision for a building that resembled a farmstead in appearance, the project comprises a collection of different scale buildings referencing the farmhouse, barn, and stable block arranged around an open yard. The two-storey buildings utilised a steel frame construction, which were able to provide the open spans and flexibility required by the clinical and administrative teams. The interior design has been heavily influenced by Lady Bacon, the Patron of the Charity, who was inspired by flowers from the garden and utilising artwork as a way to introduce nature into the interiors. Each inpatient room has direct access to a private garden area, with doors wide enough for beds to be taken outside. Sustainability consultants Hoare Lea supported the development of an energy strategy in line with the ‘Be Lean, Be Clean, Be Green’ energy hierarchy, which sets out the passive design and energy efficiency measures that have been applied to the building’s fabric and energy consumption. The hospice is an all-electric building meaning that the site is entirely fossil fuel free and produces zero carbon emissions in operation. Air source heat pumps, natural ventilation systems, and PV solar panels have been implemented to achieve this.
