Why enter the AT Awards | Students?

  • If you are a Finalist you can promote this to your networks, colleagues and add to your CV.
  • Finalists receive a Finalists logo to promote their achievement and winners will also receive a customised logo once announced.
  • Winners and their projects are featured on the Institute's website, promoted and featured at the annual AT Awards event where winners are announced, featured in Architectural Technology Journal and through our social media channels.

Project

Criteria for submission

Submissions must be based upon all, or part, of a project-based design assignment and relevant to Architectural Technology.

Each entry will be assessed against the following criteria:

  • functionality and inclusivity
  • buildability and assembly
  • health and safety
  • environment and sustainability
  • performance and durability
  • design and presentation

Your electronic submission should comprise:

  • two A1 layouts as PDFs containing general arrangement information that conveys the layout, form and aesthetic of the design;
  • two A1 layouts as PDFs communicating the detail of the fabric, structure and services, and;
  • a summary report of no more than 1000 words that describes the project and the approach taken. Your summary should state how the proposed design solution addresses the Award criteria (as listed above).

It is recommended that your summary should include the following:

  1. Project context
  2. Project brief
  3. Project analysis
  4. Design concept
  5. Technical resolution

The Awards are based upon the discipline of Architectural Technology and as such the focus should be on technical design solutions.

Whilst presentation is important to communicate the project's design solution and creativity, the technology of architecture should be the priority in regard to how the building's performance and production were optimised.

Please do not include QR codes in your submission as these will not be accessed by the Judging Panel and the minimum text on the boards should be 8pts.

Entries are judged and peer assessed by the Judging Panel for excellence in Architectural Technology irrespective of size, complexity, location or style, taking into account constraints of the brief, budget and timescales.

Report

Criteria for submission

Submissions must be a report or academic paper based upon all, or part, of an assignment or dissertation and relevant to Architectural Technology, demonstrating research proficiency. The report may include illustrations and images to support its content.

Recent AT Award winners have included the following topics:

  • conservation
  • construction materials
  • low carbon construction
  • passivhaus
  • sustainable design
  • timber construction

Your submission must demonstrate:

  • a critical awareness of current technological problems
  • ability to communicate information effectively
  • analysis of different data sources (primary and secondary)
  • appropriate conclusions and recommendations
  • critiques and rational arguments

As a guide, the below is a suggested layout for your report.

The word count for the report is 3,000 words (+/- 10%). Your submission should have a cover page including your name, the report title and word count (the word count covers all sections from and including the introduction to the conclusions and recommendations). The report should then contain:

  1. Abstract — this is usually written after the report is finished as it is a succinct summary of the report. Also include up to five keywords to indicate the main areas your report covers.
  2. Introduction
  3. Aims and objectives
  4. The main body of the report should outline the methodology that was used as well as reference to primary and secondary research.
Sections of the main body should be divided by relevant headings or sub-headings as appropriate (results/findings).
The report should contain suitable images/figures/graphs where appropriate.
  5. Conclusions and/or recommendations (as applicable)
  6. References — all sources should be appropriately referenced.
  7. Appendices — these should be suitable to and add to the content of the report without being additional sections or amounts of text that would not fit into the word count. The main report should make reference to all appendix material.

Other hints and tips
You are submitting for an Award that recognises the future generation of the discipline, therefore your report should be presented to a professional standard. This should be based on research and your findings; therefore there is no need to include any acknowledgements in this report.
