CIAT Scotland East and Scotland West would like to invite you to The Mass Timber Revolution - an online course prepared by the Mass Timber Academy.

We’ve been building with platform timber frame systems in Scotland for donkey’s years so why do I need to learn about Mass Timber?

It’s surely more expensive?
Doesn’t it use more wood than timber frame?
Is this environmentally sensible or responsible?
And what about fire and moisture control?

All extremely good and relevant questions, but since we don’t manufacture (yet) any mass timber systems in Scotland and our university schools of architecture and departments of engineering don’t (yet) teach much, if anything, about solid laminate timber systems (mass timber’s Sunday name), there’s a lot of misunderstandings around, not to mention industry myths about these technologies.

Yet there’s no question this is one of the major growth areas in the global construction industry and the reason why CIAT Scotland East and Scotland West feels the need to be pro-active on behalf of members and affiliates to ensure reliable knowledge and training is available to you.

This is why we’ve chosen to collaborate with the Edinburgh-based Mass Timber Academy to provide you with a comprehensive introduction to what mass timber is all about, the reasons why it’s increasingly in demand and the range of technological development that has taken place to move known products like Glulam into a new age of advanced timber construction.

But it’s not just Glulam: the six part online course that begins on Wednesday 19 April 2023 aims to give you independent, objective information on each of the mass timber technologies currently in use around the world and to answer most, if not all, of the questions you may have on this subject. During the six hours of continuing education provided in ‘The Mass Timber Revolution’ you’ll be introduced to around 100 very pertinent topics as well as case study exemplar projects that demonstrate the sheer breadth of mass timber design and construction innovation that’s taking place today.

The six-part, lunchtime course runs at two-weekly intervals from Wednesday 19 April to Wednesday 28 June 2023. Each online session will take place online from 13:00 - 14:00, or other time to be agreed on the dates indicated below.

E-book copies of ‘Mass Timber - an introduction to Solid Laminate Timber Systems’ will be provided to participating CIAT members
Reference/specification resources & digital tools (where relevant) will be highlighted for each mass timber system
