It is with great pride and immense respect that Gordon James Souter MCIAT is nominated for the prestigious Gold Award.

Since joining the Institute as a member of BIAT in November 1988, Gordon has served as a foundational pillar of the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists. Over nearly four decades, his unwavering dedication, passion and selfless volunteer service have profoundly shaped the Institute’s governance, elevated its professional standing and solidified its contemporary influence within the global built environment sector. Gordon’s impactful legacy is deeply rooted in his extensive, hands-on grassroots dedication at the regional level.

As an active Committee member for the Scotland West Region since the late 1990s, he has consistently championed the interests of the regional membership. He was notably one of the key instrumental figures involved in organising the memorable 1999 AGM weekend in Glasgow—a milestone event that marked the Institute's very first two-day Annual General Meeting and set a new standard for institutional gatherings. This proven local leadership seamlessly transitioned into national governance during his tenure as Regional Councillor from 2005 to 2011. In this role, he tirelessly drove regional engagement, mentored local members and strengthened the critical alignment between national strategic objectives and regional delivery. Gordon’s broader, transformative contribution to CIAT is best exemplified by his exemplary, long-standing tenure as Honorary Secretary from 2011 to 2025.

Serving on the Institute’s Executive Board across multiple successive terms, Gordon provided steady, visionary and meticulous stewardship during a period of significant institutional growth. As an Honorary Officer, his responsibilities extended far beyond standard administrative governance. He was instrumental in safeguarding the structural and constitutional integrity of the Institute while simultaneously steering its modern evolution. His deep, unparalleled understanding of the Institute’s Royal Charter and constitutional frameworks ensured that CIAT remained agile, legally robust and transparently governed as it successfully expanded its international footprint.

Central to his enduring legacy as Honorary Secretary was his transformative oversight of the Institute's Conduct Committee. Recognising that regulatory frameworks must evolve alongside a rapidly changing industry, Gordon spearheaded the critical modernisation of the Conduct Committee's processes. Under his strategic guidance, the Committee's procedures were completely overhauled to enhance transparency, objectivity and operational efficiency.

By aligning the Institute's disciplinary and regulatory mechanisms with modern legal standards and professional best practices, he reinforced public and corporate trust in the MCIAT professional designation, ensuring the Institute remains the gold standard for professional accountability. With more than three decades of expert hands-on experience in the highly competitive and challenging house-building and residential sectors, Gordon consistently brought an invaluable sense of commercial realism, financial acumen and technical precision to the Executive Board. Beyond his formal governance roles, Gordon’s true impact is defined by his character. He is widely recognised across the Institute as an approachable, encouraging and deeply passionate advocate who has generously dedicated countless hours to mentoring emerging talent and supporting Regional and Centre Committees.

Gordon has not simply occupied positions of leadership; he has actively advanced the profession. His enduring commitment, flawless professional integrity and extraordinary lifetime of volunteer service have left an indelible mark on CIAT’s history, making him an exceptionally worthy recipient of the CIAT Gold Award.
