CIAT Chartered Practice: more than just a logo

The value of Chartered Practice registration

For Chartered Architectural Technologists who provide services directly to clients, registering as a CIAT Chartered Practice forms part of the Institute's mandatory requirements.

But registration is much more than just a requirement; it provides a recognised way for practices to demonstrate their commitment to professional standards and gives access to practical support, resources and opportunities to promote their services.

Demonstrating professional commitment Demonstrating professional commitment

At its core, CIAT Chartered Practice Registration demonstrates a commitment to professional standards, accountability and responsible practice. Registered practices operate within CIAT's framework and are required to meet the standards and requirements associated with CIAT Chartered Practice.

For clients and other stakeholders, this provides reassurance that they are engaging a practice that has made a demonstrable commitment to professional standards and appropriate safeguards.

Registration also increases the visibility of your practice through inclusion in the CIAT Chartered Practice Directory, helping clients and other stakeholders find practices providing architectural technology services.

Registered practices can use the CIAT Chartered Practice logo to promote their status, with access to CIAT site signboards providing further visibility on projects.

As part of registration, CIAT Chartered Practices are required to meet a range of professional practice requirements, including (but not limited to):

  • obtaining and maintaining adequate professional indemnity insurance;
  • providing clear terms of engagement;
  • operating an effective complaints procedure;
  • acting within their competence; and
  • upholding CIAT's standards of professional conduct.

Supporting practices Supporting practices

Running a practice brings responsibilities that go well beyond technical design. CIAT Chartered Practices have access to CIAT guidance, resources and practical tools to help them manage their professional, contractual and regulatory responsibilities.

Support includes (but is not limited to):

  • Contract Administration forms and a Commercial Agreement;
  • Conditions of Engagement;
  • Information sheets and guidance;
  • access to the CIAT Insurance Service which offers contract vetting and legal advice;
  • access to client care letter templates to help practices explain statutory duties, compliance requirements and project responsibilities to clients; and
  • free calculation tool.
Looking forward

Professional practice continues to change, with increasing expectations around competence, accountability, information management and demonstrating compliance. The Institute will continue to develop its support for CIAT Chartered Practices as requirements evolve.

CIAT Chartered Practice registration provides a framework for demonstrating professional standards while giving access to resources and support to help them meet the challenges of running a professional practice.
