Housing Design Awards 2019 open to entries
The Housing Design Awards is a unique partnership between Government, its agencies and all major built professions and their professional institutes. The 20 judges represent architecture, planning, surveying, development, insurance, research and include key personnel from funders, such as Homes England and the GLA, plus the Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government. Together they search out submissions that are both innovative and replicable.
CIAT is one of the sponsors and is represented on the judging panel by Tony Whitbread MCIAT.
The awards programme shortlists dozens of 'Projects' once they have planning approval but before they are completed and occupied. This reflects the Awards' focus on finding the latest ideas for emerging markets, such as the Private Rented Sector. Custom Build, OSM and the search for liveable higher density. Some of these schemes will not be written up in the professional journals for years but their innovation needs to be promoted now. There are also awards for Completed developments and the judges visit a shortlist of up to 50 in April and May, those judged the best later becoming the subject of films where residents and the development teams behind the developments explain what has worked well.
This will be the 71st year of the Awards. The website detailing 100s of previous winners is the largest such resource in the world.
To date there have been more than 1000 winning schemes with the number awarded increasing in the past decade, reflecting the diversity of the Awards' focus and the surge of quality in growth sectors such as homes for seniors (HAPPI award) and people having greater input into the commissioning of their homes (Custom Build).
Your scheme can be entered for submission to join the role of honour from today until 4 March.
Housing Design Awards, run as a social enterprise, invest income from entries and events into analysis and promotion of ideas to improve and expand the country’s housing stock. Alongside awards for skill and innovation in general housing, there are special category awards championed by departments and agencies of government, such as:

All entries to the Housing Design Awards are added to the website to create a national archive. Some occupied winners are also filmed, complete with interviews with residents, helping to spread understanding of what impressed the multidisciplinary judging team.
