Accredited Architectural Technology programme at Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology wins award

Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology wins award for its CIAT Accredited degree programme

Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology has won the Excellence in Education and Training Award at the Building and Architect of the Year Awards 2021, for its CIAT Accredited Architectural Technology degree programme.

The submission was made by the Architectural Technology Programme Board and described the programme with a focus on meeting the challenges of overcoming the impact of COVID-19 on our students in the 2020/21 academic year. The team worked together to develop a new approach to teaching students in a blended learning environment using a variety of new technologies and platforms which proved very successful.

Students were on campus one or two days per week for socially distanced practicals and studio work. Lecturers adapted quickly to an online and blended programme delivery using Teams, Moodle and Whiteboard for online lectures. With limited access to physical construction sites, lecturers adapted their teaching to overcome this limitation. The use of technologies such as BIM 360, Holobuilder and laser scanning technology helped lecturers to work together with students in the new virtual environment.

Mary Rogers from Galway-Mayo said "We were delighted to win this award at a very prestigious event!"
