CIAT, CIEEM and others write letter to PM on value of nature

Along with 9 other organisations, CIAT and CIEEM have written to the Prime Minister and Chancellor on the value of nature to the economy and society.

The letter expresses deep concern around the perceived conflict between development and nature conservation. It argues that the idea of choosing between housing and environmental protection is a false dichotomy and that both can be achieved with the right policies and expert engagement.

Referencing the 2021 Dasgupta Review, it emphasises that nature is fundamental to the economy and public well-being, providing essential ecosystem services.

The letter highlights the economic benefits of nature-based solutions and calls for government action, including embedding natural capital accounting into policy, engaging with environmental experts, supporting nature-positive development, and increasing investment in nature recovery.

CIAT urges the government to take a leadership role in integrating environmental protection into development planning.
