Government announces "fundamental review of building regulations guidance"

Last week, as part of a parliamentary debate of the findings of Grenfell Inquiry, Deputy Prime Minister and Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, Angela Rayner, announced a fundamental review of building regulations guidance in England, including the Approved Documents.

The review will focus on ensuring that guidance is clear and enables compliance with regulations and is a direct response to the finding of the Grenfell Inquiry that current Approved Documents are not always clear, as well as the Prime Minister's commitment to delivering a "generational shift in the safety and quality of housing".

In addition to addressing clarity, the review will consider how to ensure that guidance is accessible to SMEs, while keeping up with innovation in technology and practice. CIAT welcomes these considerations, which will enhance the Approved Documents as resources for technical building design.

The review is being led by the Building Safety Regulator, and CIAT will be actively engaging in this process, which will commence in 2025. For more information, contact [email protected]
