Hope Rise
ZED PODS Limited

Hope Rise is a net zero-carbon development of 11 residential dwellings delivered through a unique collaboration and partnership between Bristol City Council, Bristol Housing Festival and YMCA. It is an example of sustainable development above an existing public car park, providing homes for vulnerable households, giving them safe and healthy places to live. Hope Rise was built using an off-site volumetric MMC platform that enabled the development of constrained sites to become a commercial reality. This development uses a 30-year air rights lease to build one and two bed homes. The design of Hope Rise prioritises the health and well-being of the occupants through low-carbon design, sustainable practices, and community-oriented approaches. All homes are open floor plans and dual aspect with large triple-glazed windows maximising natural daylight and airflow to create a bright and airy homes. Sound-absorbing insulation and strategic layout create quiet and peaceful living spaces. The residents have found that once in their homes they are entirely unaware of the car park. The Hope Rise development attempts to tackle both affordable housing and climate crises, whilst helping the most vulnerable people in the society. Production for this project included careful material selection and sourcing locally where possible, minimising embodied carbon throughout the supply chain and at every stage of the building lifecycle. The form of MMC construction meant that the buildings was completed more than 90% offsite. The homes have been designed and to be both highly energy efficient and net zero-carbon in operation, to secure residents the lowest possible running costs, with roof-mounted solar panels to generate renewable electricity in the day, quiet running micro air-source heat pumps for low-energy heating, controlled ventilation which recovers usable heat from inside the building whilst bringing in fresh air, triple glazing, LED lighting and energy efficient appliances.
