Code of Conduct
CIAT's members and affiliates must abide by its Code of Conduct.
Student members are not permitted to offer or provide architectural advice and/or services directly to clients (this includes family, friends and neighbours, whether the work is paid or unpaid or carried out in either a full-time, part-time or as-and-when capacity), regardless of the size and scope of the project or fee arrangement.
A student member who is offering or considering providing services directly to clients as a Principal (this includes family, friends and neighbours, full time, part time, paid or unpaid) must re-register as a 'CIAT affiliate' and register their practice with the Institute as well as obtain and maintain adequate professional indemnity insurance. Details of this can be obtained from [email protected]. Student membership does not carry a designation.
Student membership is an important first step towards professional qualification as a Chartered Architectural Technologist. Student membership is normally followed by Associate membership, ACIAT, but could also be as an affiliate and then attainment of MCIAT. The specimen documents below can be used as an exemplar to demonstrate competence when progressing membership. Details of the qualifying process can be found here.
All members, including students, and affiliates are required to adhere to the Code of Conduct, included below. The Code of Conduct outlines the professional behaviours, ethics and responsibilities expected of members and affiliates. You are asked to familiarise yourself with the document on a regular basis and advise CIAT of any potential breach as soon as you become aware. The resources below are current. Please note however that they are under constant review and are amended to ensure they comply with the relevant legislation in force at the time. We recommend you visit the website regularly for updates.
