BSI seeks Committee Chair for B/209 ‘General design and construction standards’

CIAT has been made aware that BSI is looking for a new committee chair for B/209 ‘General design and construction standards’ and would welcome applications from Chartered Members.

This committee is responsible for planning and coordinating standards relating to national codes of practice and for the design and construction of buildings, including recent standards such as BS 5606 Accuracy and tolerance in design and construction, the upcoming BS 7000-4 'Design management systems – Managing design in construction' and other areas including sanitary installations, designing for material efficiency, and workmanship on construction sites.

With the support of the BSI committee manager, the committee chair runs committee meetings (approximately twice a year) and leads the committee's work program by reviewing published standards whilst also being conscious of potential new areas for standardisation. As is the case for all BSI committee membership, this role is voluntary though hopefully candidates will find value in gaining insight into standardisation and ensuring the stakeholder's voices are heard. If anyone would like to learn more about the role, a chair role description can be found on the BSI site here.

This is a pivotal committee which covers so much and could cover more. Made up mostly from representatives of sometimes quite narrow expert groups, it is important that the main expertise of the chair is what I call 'expert generalist' i.e. their main expertise is a very wide understanding rather than a specialism, but capable of understanding the detail of those specialisms. A Chartered Architectural Technologist is the perfect fit, particularly as another vital quality is understanding, within all the technical matters, the importance of design.
