Consultation | Scottish Building Safety Levy

The Scottish Government is seeking views on proposals for a building safety levy.

The tragic Grenfell Tower Fire has highlighted the need to remediate buildings fitted with unsafe cladding and other safety defects. This work comes at substantial cost, which in some cases, may fall to the Scottish Government.

To help fund this remediation work, the Scottish Government is seeking to establish a building safety levy, similar to that which has been developed, but not yet launched, in England. As proposed, the levy would be paid by larger developers, but some costs may be passed through the value chain to building designers. The Scottish Government is seeking views on the levy’s scope, exemptions, calculation methods, operating body, and processes.

Given the consultation’s focus on large developers, CIAT does not expect to submit a central response to the consultation. Members and affiliates wishing to respond to the consultation directly can do so via the Scottish Government’s consultation hub, Citizen Space. The closing date for responses is 18 November 2024. The full consultation documents can be found here.
