Housing Design Awards announced
The CIAT-supported Housing Design Awards have been announced. The supreme winner was The Malings, Newcastle Upon Tyne, by Ash Sakula, which has revitalised a derelict industrial area with 70 new homes all with river views. Other winners included Frampton Park Baptist church and apartments, Hackney, by Matthew Lloyd Architects, and hoUSe, Manchester, by shedkm.
President Gary Mees said 'We were delighted to be one of this year's supporters of Awards. The judging panel included, for the first time Tony Whitbread MCIAT, who expressed his enthusiasm for the event, and the record number of entries. I was pleased to be asked to announce one award in the complete category, that being the conversion of Lilian Baylis School in Lambeth. We look forward to seeing next year's entries.'
Tony Whitbread MCIAT, Chartered Architectural Technologist, added 'I am honoured to have represented CIAT as a judge for the HDA. The process and various views of the judges from the wide spectrum of organisations involved were enlightening. I would like to thank Kier Construction London for releasing me to be involved, the Institute, the HDA and other judges for the experience.'
The Awards were set up by the government in 1947 to drive the rebuilding of post-war Britain. Over the years the Awards have grown and developed with involvement from professional bodies including CIAT, RIBA and RTPI.
