New toolkit: Designing LGBTQIA+ Inclusive Spaces
Designed by Luke Fawcett from Queer Places, this toolkit has been developed through a year of engagement and research with LGBTQIA+ communities and built environment professionals across the UK. It supports those involved in shaping places to work with communities throughout the design process, creating better places for everyone.
Developed to be used alongside the Inclusive Design Overlay to the RIBA Plan of Work this toolkit shows how to embed inclusive design from Stage 0. It also includes an interactive workshop activity which can be used by practices, project teams, clients, and community groups to bring meaningful ways of thinking to the design process.
Most importantly, this toolkit forms part of our wider work at RIBA in supporting communities who may be feeling pressures to hide their true selves, either in the workplace or the design process. It is our belief that the built environment should be an inclusive and safe place for everyone to thrive.
Not just during Pride, but all year round, we are committed to supporting the LGBTQIA+ community. This practice tool is one of many ways we can all encourage inclusion and diversity within architecture.
