Petrol and diesel car sales to end by 2040

Implications for domestic and commercial design

HM government announced this week that it will end the sale of all new conventional petrol and diesel cars and vans by 2040, as it unveiled new plans to tackle air pollution.

The UK Plan for Tackling Roadside Nitrogen Dioxide Concentrations produced by Defra and the Department for Transport outlines how councils with the worst levels of air pollution at busy road junctions and hotspots must take robust action.

Although the immediate goal is the reduction of air pollution, in the long term this will clearly have implications for the construction industry because of the infrastructure required for the generation and provision of alternative energy sources such as electricity and liquid petroleum gas.

A public consultation to address concerns will take place in the autumn, and the government has pledged £225 million for all immediate work.
