Graham Anderson MCIAT and his family's shed has been shortlisted for Shed of the Year 2024 under the ‘Cabins/Summerhouse’ category.

Named the Anderson Garden Room, it is a self-built garden office built for the Anderson’s growing young family to free up a bedroom in the house. The shed was built on weekends over the course of a year, with childcare support from grandparents to look after their two young children, aged one and four.

To save money and improve sustainability, many of the materials were sourced using free ads such as Facebook Marketplace and Gumtree, including the PIR roof insulation and plywood ceiling.

Most of the reclaimed timber used in the structure of the shed are from Southampton Wood Recycling Project, while the front Velfac window was procured from a second hand window supplier. The decorative geometric acoustic ceiling was painstakingly hand made by Graham’s father-in-law, who hand drilled every hole.

Inside there is a small kitchenette with a freshwater tap, an undercounter drinks fridge, and space for two desks. It is a highly insulated and airtight building to help with environmental performance; it’s warm in winter and cool in summer due to the sails in the pergola shading the bi-fold doors. These bi-folds open up fully to the patio to make the space more social for barbeques and social gatherings. Graham adds: “And the boys love playing Lego on the floor!”

Shed of the Year is an annual award founded by head judge Andrew Wilcox and sponsored by Cuprinol, and this year is celebrating eighteen years of existence.

Public voting is open until Friday 2 August, so click this link to vote today!
