Choosing the correct LED step lighting system - How to guide
For Architectural Technologists, step lighting isn’t just a design flourish, it’s a compliance-critical detail that demands technical rigour. The right LED system enhances safety, supports accessibility, and integrates seamlessly with the built environment.
Profile selection matters
Start by matching the stair nosing profile to the step geometry and floorcovering thickness. Gradus offers PVC-u and aluminium options, with gauges suited to everything from resilient finishes to 12mm stone. This ensures flush installation and reduces trip risk.
Prioritise slip resistance
BS 8300-2:2018 and BS 5395-1:2010 require inserts with a Pendulum Test Value (PTV) above 36. Gradus Xtra-grip and Xtra-grip Plus inserts meet this benchmark, making them ideal for high-traffic environments like healthcare and education.
Ensure visual contrast
A minimum 30-point Light Reflectance Value (LRV) difference between nosing and adjacent floorcoverings is essential for visibility. This supports compliance with Approved Document M and BS 8493, enhancing safety for all users.
