Finishes and Interiors Sector: Supporting better buildings from the inside out

Find out more about the Finishes and Interiors Sector (FIS) sector, its role in the performance, safety and usability of buildings, and the training and professional development available through the FIS Academy.

Who is the Finishes and Interiors Sector (FIS)

The finishes and interiors sector in the UK has an annual turnover of £13 billion and a workforce of 250,000 people – it accounts for approximately 10% of all construction works.  Their work turns a structure into an office, hospital, hotel, home, school, university, retail or entertainment space.  The work is intrinsic to the safety, comfort, and productivity of all those that live, work, learn, and recuperate in a building.

Buildings will often have over 30 “fit-outs” in their lifetime. Each one fundamentally impacts, not just the way a building looks, but can change how the space is used and how it performs.

FIS has a growing community of over 600 members drawn from contractors, manufacturers and distributors of ceilings, steel framing systems, operable walls, partitions, plastering, drylining and specialist interior fit-out and refurbishment businesses operating in every type of building.

The FIS Academy

The FIS Academy provides access to industry-focused training, learning resources and professional development for people working in (or entering) the interiors and fit-out sector. It supports both individuals and employers in building a competent workforce.
