Research on gender in the built environment

Leeds Beckett University (LBU) is conducting a short survey to understand how the built environment can embed gender-informed approaches in their work.

Growing evidence shows that the way we plan and design our built environment — including streets, parks, and town centres — often doesn’t reflect the needs or lived experiences of women and girls. This can affect how safe they feel, impact their health and wellbeing, and reduce their access to opportunities.

In recent years, there has been a resurgence in efforts to raise awareness of these issues and provide practical guidance for built environment professionals, including designers, planners, and developers, to create places that work for women, girls, and gender-diverse people. This is often referred to as gender-informed planning and design.

By completing the short survey, you will help LBU to:

  • Understand the level of awareness of gender-informed planning and design across the built environment sector in the UK
  • Learn about existing good practices
  • Identify key barriers and opportunities for change
